Game Work Massive Update!

You can now see In Game assets I created, as well as some interstitials. The UI Artwork section in there is still stuff I did from a test to apply at a company, so that's not "real" per say, but the other sections are real. Give em a look!

Hey everyone!

Sorry for the sparse updating! I'm actually in the process of asking if I can post stuff I made at work on my site (obviously I don't want to overstep my boundaries) so with that hopefully I'll have more updates soon!

I updated my Resume' today, simply because I didn't realize I haven't updated it since I got the job at Hexify. I also added that "Nemmo Langheart" Photoshop painting I was making of my Pathfinder character to the Artwork section. While I never really finished making a background for it, and I still technically consider it a "Work in Progress", at the rate its going I'll be surprised if I ever get back to it. I think it looks good enough though and I'm a little curious as to why I never posted it there before!

In other news, I'm still happily working away at Hexify. I've settled in more here in my new place in California and even got myself a new room mate!

His full name is "Moses Sarthak Bruno" (Moses in dedication to "The Journey of Moses", which is the game that allowed me to start my new life here in California, and "Sarthak" in dedication to TOFA 2011, my entry "Sarthak! The Unforgivable!" which had a giant Godzilla-like lizard in it, as well as TOFA being a large factor in why my demo reel looked good enough for Hexify to consider me.) but I call him "Mo" for short. He is my new Leopard Gecko, and he seems just like I did when I first moved here! He's warming up to the place though (I've only had him a week as of this posting.) so I'm sure he'll be just fine. Just giving an update on life in general, hopefully more of my work will show up soon. I leave you now with a sketch of a Self Portrait I may add to and paint sometime.

Hello everyone!

It has been a while since I've updated, and I just wanted to post some news. Firstly, I am on IMDB.com for my storyboard work on the movie I Heart Shakey. Need proof? Look no further than by clicking here! My scene was actually cut from the final version of the movie due to problems of it being shot in 3D, but I will update if it becomes a special feature as a deleted scene on the DVD or something, and I also will still be mentioned in the credits under Storyboard Artists. The movie is slated to come out early next year.

In other news, I have been hard at work at Hexify Inc. The job is incredibly fun and the people are extremely great. I have learned so much about how Flash Games and Facebook Games are made, different techniques to use in Flash, and overall just how to make my art look better. Its definitely a great learning experience, which is exactly what I look for in a job (or in this case, a career!). So far I have directed and animated 4 cutscenes, I've created some characters and animated almost countless others by this point, and designed some items that you can purchase in game. I'm very grateful for this experience and I couldn't be happier with what I'm doing.

New Job!

I'm excited to announce that I have a new full time job! I am a Junior Artist at Hexify in Mountain View, California. I will be leaving on Tuesday, October 11th to start my new life in the San Jose area. So far I've telecommuted the job for a few days and its definitely a fun, creative and engaging experience. I help make art assets and animations for Facebook social games, like Hexify's newest game "The Journey of Moses". Check them out!

I forgot to put up a painting I made for my grandparents last year! I made a painting of me and my three brothers for a Christmas present last year around November, and you can now view it either below or in the Artwork section. Also, the "Nemmo Langheart" painting is temporarily on hold because things are a little busy right now. I'm flying out to California on Wednesday for a job interview, and if I get it I would have to relocate, so that is what is sucking up all my time right now. I will make a NEW Work in Progress Report post when I get back to it.

I'm working on a portrait of my character from this Pathfinder campaign me and my friends are playing. I thought it would be a fun way to get used to my Cintiq while also beefing up my Art Portfolio. I didn't think I would post my progress reports, but recently I thought of a fun way to do it, and I will be doing this for now on as well. For future reference, if you ever see a Blog Entry labeled "Work in Progress Report!", check back to it often, as I will update it as I work on something.

As far as this drawing goes, for now I am done with the character (with the exception of a few touch ups here and there.) Next up comes the Background and Foreground elements, then I'm going to relight the character (as in add any reflections to his armor that reflect what's in the foreground and background, as well as any lighting the background may provide. I'm thinking there may be a Volcano in the background, so I'm probably going to add some nice red rim lighting. I also need to add a final overall shadow eventually.)

Because I won the Newgrounds Tournament of Flash Animators, it is customary that the winner draws themselves interacting with Earth in some way. I made this new drawing in a combination of Photoshop and Illustrator. I decided to go with an approach of me drawing a mustache and monocle on Earth, much like the old Looney Tunes gag. I figured this pretty much shows off my personality and would be a funny picture. You can view it in the Artwork section or below.

TOFA Update! Resume Update! New Animation!

Scores are in, you are now on the website of the Newgrounds Tournament of Flash Animators 2011 Champion! That's right, I won! I am awarded the title of TOFA 2011 Champion of Flash Animators, $1220, Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere CS5, a T Shirt, and an interview with The Interviewer. This has been a great experience and I learned so much about Flash animation.

Now that TOFA is over, I have decided to add it to my resume, because I figured that TOFA was 6 straight months of animation with tight deadlines and payment in the end, it should be worth experience.

This is my entry for the 2011 Tournament of Flash Animators (TOFA) Final Round. We had 4 weeks to animate to the theme "A Clean Slate". I want to give a BIG shout out to my music man, Allen Cruz (or "Butterpaw" as he is known on Youtube.) thanks for the great soundtrack!

This was a really satisfying and fun animation to make! I can confidently say that I am proud of the work I created here and wholly plan on using alot of it in my latest Demo Reel, which is one of the main reasons I joined TOFA this year anyway. Looking back on all the rounds prior to this, I can honestly say my skills have vastly improved at Flash. Compare "Totaled", last year's Final Round entry, to this one and you'll see a definite increase in my skill, and this is something that, even if I don't win TOFA, I can deem as a win. The characters were extremely fun to work with, them being simple blob characters that do these crazy actions. If you didn't catch it, the "clean slate" was the characters themselves, starting off extremely simple and then adding all these crazy things, until finally going back to a clean slate again.

I'm glad I was able to figure out how to do the reflections, as I feel they are a big part of the message. He is not looking at himself, but the images beyond the reflections (like the Advertisements and such.) and he's not realizing what a mess he is making of himself, being too focused on making himself what the media deems "attractive" (until it obviously spirals out of control to the point of hilarity.)

The main motivation and reference for this piece is thanks to my girlfriend. The girl (Blobette as I like to call her.) resembles her (as much as a blob can) and acts just like her. Her ability to make me feel great about myself when I'm feeling down is truly astounding. For this I thank you babe :). But this isn't just for her, its for anyone who has that special someone that, no matter what has you down, they have that special and amazing power to make you feel great again.

All in all, TOFA has been very rewarding this year (and even more so if I actually win it!) and I hope this latest entry made you giggle and saw "Awwww". This has been Dave Bruno for the Newgrounds Tournament of Flash Animators 2011, I'll catch ya later.

I have received permission to post a few snippets of the Storyboard Animatics from a short film I worked on called "Detective Ralph Raccoon" (which you can see some artwork from in the Artwork Section.). You can view the Storyboard Animatics either in the Storyboard section (right at the top, you can't miss it!) or you can view them below.

I created all the concept art and storyboards for the animated short "Detective Ralph Raccoon". This is an animatic for one of the scenes in the short. Ralph Raccoon and his trusty sidekick, Walter Squawb, are investigating Dr. Dog's house to find any clues about his kidnapping. Animatic was hand drawn, then compiled together in Adobe After Effects CS5.

This is the rough animatic for my finished piece "Simple Tests", which was made for the 2011 Tournament of Flash Animators (TOFA) Third Round. I initially did the voice acting for the main character as a temporary test until Kevin Czarnecki was able to fill in. This was made entirely in Adobe Flash CS5.

I haven't updated in a while (due to the fact that I want to keep my Final Entry a secret until it's released.) but I just wanted to let everyone know that yes, it's coming along VERY smoothly (I only have 5 scenes left to do and I am 3 days AHEAD of schedule.) and that you can expect it around September 1st when it's due. I also have a name for it now, (for the longest time I couldn't think of anything and I was just using the working title, which I hated.) thanks to one of my friends, which is "The Shape of Love".

I went to Chicago Comic Con this weekend as a little mini vacation, and I had a blast! Now I will get right back to working on my Final Round TOFA piece, right after I show you all how awesome this weekend was in one picture:

But as far as TOFA goes, I have just received the music today, which matches perfectly. Thanks to Allen Cruz, the soundtrack adds so much to the piece. I have actually also animated about 6 scenes of it as well. Things are running along smoothly.

TOFA Update! New Animation!

I have made it to the 5th and Final round of the Newgrounds.com Tournament of Flash Animators (TOFA) 2011, sponsored by Adobe. The theme for this round is "A Clean Slate" and I may already have an idea up my sleeve. All I know is that I have to bring my A Game and go all out on this one! I have also added "Simple Tests" my 3rd round entry, to the Animation section. You can view it there, or below.

This is my entry for the 2011 Tournament of Flash Animators (TOFA) 3rd Round. We had 4 weeks to animate to the theme "Divide by Zero". While dividing by zero is literally in this animation, the way I interpreted the theme was how everyone reacted when I told them what it was. The conversation, every time I had it, went like this:

"So what's the theme for Round 3 of TOFA?"
"Divide by Zero"
"That's impossible!"

There you go! But more literally, I did research as to how this theme could be interpreted. Sure, there is the Internet Meme way where the world implodes or something, but I vowed that I would never do an internet meme (well, unless its something to do with Slenderman, because he is scary and awesome! But definitely not any of the "funny" internet memes) solely due to the fact that I don't find them funny and everyone does them. I like being an original.

So the ways I found I could do this theme varied. One way was the fact that Mathematician's consider dividing by zero "an expression that has no meaning", which I thought of a few dramatic ideas for (like Totaled 2), but none of them took off the ground.

Then I took it literally, inventing this Math World (inspired by Donald Duck in Math Land.) and had this Division Beast attacking a town, then a small, sheepish character who represented Zero stood against it and the beast inevitably killed itself because you cant divide by Zero. It was like a Children's cartoon, no strong violence, a nice sounding Narrator explaining the whole thing, a moral about actions speaking louder than words and all that jazz. Problem was I couldn't figure out a way to write it and even if I did I think it would have been 10 minutes long.

Then finally I came to the fact that dividing by zero is literally impossible (go ahead, try it on a calculator, when I did it on my phone's calculator it says "Invalid Operation".). So instead of doing the theme "Divide by Zero" I broadened it to "Impossible".

So there you have it! I really liked this animation due to the fact that I made it more about the visual, character acting portion than the verbal jokes and story. I definitely have 2 scenes from this that I am going to put into my demo reel. I also found it extremely fun drawing Bill Gully (or "Son" as he's referred to by the Boss. However, to clear up confusion, he is not actually his son or blood related in any way. Boss refers to everyone younger than him that's male that way.) in his DXi Human Testing Jumpsuit. I've always wanted to do something involving campy old Sci-Fi movies (much like Don Bluth's Space Ace.) and his suit kind of reminded me of that.

New Animation!

I decided to make a video about how I approach a scene, posting examples of each step of the way and detailing what exactly I do for that part. The Animation is from my newest, unreleased TOFA Round 3 entry, "Simple Tests". The scene took me about 6 hours to complete. If you would like to see the Evolution of this scene, you can view it either below or in the Animation section.

I wanted to show a quick demonstration about how I work, and I really liked the scene I just made so I figured this would be a great way to do it. I made this scene over the span of about 6 hours, and here are the steps I took:

Step 01: The Storyboard Pass. This is where I just do a simple, rough animatic, just to get a feel for the timing. The poses aren't necessarily finalized, but it helps me know the general idea of what I want. Usually at this phase I don't have the final sounds, so I make the sounds myself. I show this to the Voice Actors so that they can get some direction as to what I'm looking for.

Step 02: The Rough Notes Pass. Here is where some actual animation comes into play, however it is extremely rough. I try to keep it loose and simple, not spending too long on any single frame. This helps with the timing and posing, letting me explore how fast and slow I want something to move, and how much weight to add or subtract from the character. This stage is a fun improv session because sometimes I'll notice something in this phase that wasn't obvious before and I go from there (like him placing his foot on his forearm for support or having the helmet fly up when he falls down).

Step 03: The Black Line Pass. This is where I get more on model and try to spend as much time as I can with each frame. I tend to slightly deviate from the Rough Notes pass due to the proportions being off or I notice an arc can look better by moving him slightly.

Step 04: The Final Pass. In Flash, I actually leave the Black Line Pass on one layer and copy and paste it onto a layer below, and using this layer below I draw the lines for the shading. Once the shading is complete and all the colors are placed on the character, I go back up to the Black Line original layer and add the highlights (like the glare on his helmet.) I'll also double check everything here to make sure I like the arcs, and if I find a problem I slide the frame around until it makes an arc I like.

I managed to survive to TOFA Round 3, winning by a mere 3 points! Fungasm, you truly had me shaking in my boots! Great entry man! The theme for Round 3 is "Divide by Zero", this will be a tough round indeed!

This is my entry for Round 2 of the Tournament of Flash Animators (TOFA) 2011. The theme was "Wrongfully Accused".

Finally! I thought of a short entry! My other two entries were 3 minutes and 7 minutes respectively. Thanks to this entries short length, I was able to spend more time on the animation. I believe this is my best ANIMATED piece of TOFA so far (plot still goes to "Lost Heart, Found Danger", but the animation here definitely improved.) Animated in Adobe Flash CS5.

Well... its actually a really old animation I never finished, but I decided to post it anyway because I feel that it deserved some recognition. Its the 3rd movie in what was suppose to be a series of 12 animations called "Dave Bruno's Visual Pun Time". Each of these animations has a play on words as their theme, and this entry was "Sign Language". New Project!

This is just a fun little side thing I'm working on, but I thought I would share it with everyone. My brother had the idea of getting posters from things he's worked on and framing them to display in his room. I thought it was a neat idea, but I didn't want to go the poster route.

I enjoy seeing art of frames from animations in small picture frames, so I decided to obtain a still frame or something like that, be it a storyboard, a screenshot, or a rough animation frame, and print them all out on nice glossy photo paper, then frame them all and display them on my wall. I had a template I created so they are all made the same way (with the art in the center and the black letterbox around them, with a little blurb that says what it is, what its from, and what year I made it in.)

I made a picture of the monster from my upcoming TOFA animation, "Sarthak the Unforgivable!". Looking back on it, I'm not sure why I made this picture, considering I don't think I can use it anywhere in the actual animation, but it was fun and I like how Sarthak looks, so I figured he deserved a Digital Painting. If you didn't catch it, it's paying homage to the final scene of Jurassic Park. You can view it either in the Artwork section, or below.

Resume Update!

I have updated my Resume as I have finished some Contract work I have been doing. It now has my most recent work listed as "Contract Concept and Storyboard Artist" for an animated show pitch called "Detective Ralph". I made concept art for the characters and environments, as well as storyboards and animatics for the entire film. The show is being pitched to Nickelodeon studios soon, and I will update here when I receive news.

TOFA Update! New Animation!

I made it to Round 2! Which means starting today I have 4 weeks to animate a new piece to the theme "Wrongfully Accused". Now we begin the brainstorming session!

Also, speaking of TOFA, "Lost Heart, Found Danger" is now in the Animation section! Check it out!

"Other Work" and "Storyboards" Section!

Hello all! The Other Work section has just been put up. Basically, this new section will house other things I am capable of doing. Right now it houses "MOTION GRAPHICS WORK" and "UI ARTWORK", but soon it will also be home to "CHARACTER DESIGN", "ENVIRONMENT DESIGN" and more. Most of the things done in the Other Work section were made for jobs, so give it a look!

The new Storyboards Section is still being worked out, but in there you will find Storyboards to projects I've made or helped work on.

TOFA Round 1 Progress

Part 1 is done! I just have to animate 3 scenes per day in order to make the June 9th deadline. If you missed it, I have been updating the screenshots in the previous "TOFA Round 1 Progress" entry. There are 9 screenshots as of this entry, and there are bound to be more popping up there so keep an eye on that post for more cool screenshots. Its looking really good and I'm really happy with it, hopefully you will be too!

Hey everybody! I have posted a vaguely altered new Demo Reel on my website. I basically replaced one part with the work I did on a Trix Yogurt commercial. Around June 9th or so I plan on making an entirely new Demo Reel from scratch (as I will be done with "Lost Heart, Found Danger" around then and have a copy of the finish Trix Yogurt commercial.) For now, enjoy this new temp one.

TOFA Round 1 Progress

Animation is underway! The short comes out to be about 6 minutes long (not very short) and is 51 scenes (separated into 4 parts.). Luckily, alot of it is inner monologueing and still images. That being said, Im sure you'll find it very exciting and fun to watch. Ive stylized the characters as monochromatic against stark Black and White backgrounds. Check out the screenshots below:

Trix Yogurt Commercial aired!

Hey guys! The Trix Yogurt commercial I worked on with Calabash aired yesterday. I did the shadows and rim lighting on the Rabbit for basically about half of the entire commercial (most notably the very last shot where the Rabbit stares wistfully at the Yogurt and sighs.) it should air on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon, so keep an eye out for it!

The script is finally done and the Voice Acting is underway. The title (for now) is "Vic Aces in ' Lost Heart, Found Danger'", and it is a Noire story about a straight talking detective who helps a devilish dame in finding her lost heirloom. Twists, Action, and romance abound in this stylized drama!

TOFA Round 1 Progress

The Tournament of Flash Animators started on Monday, and I think I finally have a script and idea down to start animating. Its going to be a Noire story, with lots of action and a neat stylized look. I'm planning on having black and white backgrounds with singularly colored characters (like in the picture below.) The entry itself wont be too long (the script is about 4 pages, so hopefully that will translate to about a minute, maybe a minute and a half if stretching it.) but thanks to the added week in the Tournament, a shorter film gives me more time to polish it. Keep an eye out for more progress!

Brand new website! Ive been meaning to change this, my old website liked branding Columbia College all over it. I'm still kind of getting everything ready, but for now you can view most of my Animations under the Animations tab, my Resume (and soon Bio) under the Resume tab, and alot of artwork under the... you guessed it!
